Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What makes your treatment for insomnia in adults unique?

Answer: This treatment provides a cure for insomnia in just 6 - 8 weeks that lasts a lifetime. Also, unlike what you might read in a book that only emphasizes one treatment method or consists of a program that is the same for everyone, the treatment we provide is carefully individualized for each client based on their unique problems and needs. Even people who have read the books and tried other approaches to no avail have found success with Dr. Moorcroft. He constantly is including new and updated methods in his practice things that often take several years to appear in books. (If you are interested in the technical details of the treatment methods used by Dr. Moorcroft click here.)

Question: What are the risks involved?

Answer: There are no known risks to you or your health, only benefits.

Question: How does it work?

Answer: Most insomnia is caused by negative ideas, thoughts, and attitudes that a person has about their sleep coupled with bad sleep habits. Many times people are not aware of these things and how they are affecting their sleep. Even if they are aware of the source of their sleeping problem, they usually do not know how to make changes. And it is not always easy to make the necessary corrections by onesself. Dr. Moorcroft will individually guide and coach you with exercises and information that will reverse or eliminate your bad habits and negative thoughts that are preventing you from getting the sleep you want and need. This is a cure for insomnia that lasts a lifetime. (To obtain free, additional information about insomnia click here.)

Question: What is the evidence that this treatment works?

Answer: There have been a number of studies in the last decade published in top medical journals that have evaluated the effectiveness of the type of treatment I offer for insomnia. Overall, these reports show most people's sleep improving to the point where they are satisfied with their sleep.

These studies have also compared the type of treatment I offer to sleeping pills. While a sleeping pill can provide immediate relief, it only lasts one night; its effects are temporary. The type of treatment I offer typically takes a few weeks before improvement is noted but then it lasts a lifetime.

Question: Can you treat me over the phone or via email?

Answer: Although face-to-face sessions in one of our offices is preferable, we can do appointments over the phone supplemented with email attachments for forms and handouts. This has been done successfully with a number of my clients in the past.

Question: Who do you treat?

Question: What can be done for shift-workers who have problems sleeping?

Answer: Working during hours that require you to sleep during the day usually makes getting adequate sound sleep difficult. This then causes problems keeping alert on the job, medical problems, and interactions with family and friends. While it is usually not possible to solve sleep problems in shift-workers, I can usually suggest things that make sleeping during the day much better.

Question: What does the type of treatment you offer cost?

Answer: To answer this question let me ask you what your insomnia is costing you now. Are there direct costs for medications and doctor's visits? Is it costing you in your work by lost productivity, missed opportunities for advancement, or even the ability to work or find a job? Is it costing you quality of life by your having to drag through day after day fatigued, emotionally down or on edge, or unable to do the things you want and like to do? Do you want to go on like this or would you rather make significant improvements? If so, getting relief from your insomnia is valuable to you.

For less than the cost of half a year's supply of sleeping pills you can get lasting relief from your insomnia and the problems it presents to you. Even if your insurance does not pay for the type of treatment I offer (some do but many do not) think of how much getting the sleep you want and need is worth to you. Compare the cost of the type of treatment I offer to what you spend for other things that provide quality of life such as entertainment, comfortable cars, vacations, and the like. And think how much quality you are loosing from these things because of the effects of your insomnia. Now ask yourself, "Isn't that worth a few hundred dollars?"

Question: Where are your offices located.

Answer: I currently see clients in Fort Collins, Loveland,  Greeley, and Denver Colorado.

Question: What is your background that enables you to help people like me with my sleep problems?

Answer: I have a PhD in Psychology from Princeton University. I have been involved with researching, writing about, and teaching about sleep for almost 35 years. I have done fellowships in sleep disorders medicine at Rush Medical College in Chicago (1980) and The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota (1987).
